5 YEARS AGO (2021)

The Malad High School music performing groups participated in the District 5 Music Contest, which was held at Snake River High School. In addition, four soloists participated in the solo/ensemble contest.

The Malad High School Choir, Chamber Choir, and Concert Band all received Superior ratings, the highest possible rating. The choir judges, Clay McKee, formerly the choir director at Marsh Valley High School, and Susan Mann, formerly the choir director at Blackfoot High School had high praise for the Malad groups and offered valuable advice for the performing groups and for Mr. Foster Garrett, the Malad High School and Middle School music specialist.

Of the soloists, Sarah Young received a Superior rating for her alto vocal solo. Lindi Young received an Excellent (2nd place) for her alto saxophone solo, Jaxsom Whipple received an Excellent for his French horn solo and Reagan Smith received an Excellent for her alto vocal solo.

The Malad High School softball team ended their 2021 regular season with an undefeated record, finishing off with a win against Soda Springs.

The Malad High School baseball team earned a big win against Soda Springs to finish the 2021 regular season as the first place team in the 2A Fifth District, going undefeated in district play.

10 YEARS AGO (2016) The Small Business Exporter of the Year Award was presented to Mike Hess Jr. and Jason Kimberling. Sales Manager Michael Hess, Jr. and Export Logistics Manager Jason Kimberling of Hess Pumice Products, headquartered in Malad City, Idaho have been named the U.S. Small Business Administration’s 2016 Region 10 Small Business Exporter of the Year. Hess and Kimberling were nominated for this prestigious award by Commercial Relationship Manager Heath Mitchell of Zions Bank in Idaho Falls, Idaho.

On April 10, 2016, Benjamin Waldron, son of Luke and Shayna Waldron of Samaria, earned the Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout award. Ben is a member of Boy Scout Troop 444.

For his Eagle Project, Ben wanted to make the playground at the Samaria Park a safer place for kids. After several kids were injured on the playground, including his cousin Hayden whose injury resulted in orthopedic surgery, Ben was determined to make it a safer place for kids.

What started as a simple idea turned into a full-blown playground makeover.

An enjoyable evening was held at the Oneida County Library as Lois Lower presented on her short history of growing up in Holbrook, Idaho, entitled “When We Were Little”.

After 34 years, on Monday, May 2, 2016, Malad cable TV was shut off for Malad residents. With the advent of satellite systems and other technological advances in the industry, there is not enough demand for cable television in Malad.

Shirlee Blaisdell was there for the birth and the death of Malad cable TV! In August of 1982, she and Ron were announced by Satellite Cablevision of Pocatello as the maintenance and installation agents for the company in Malad. As an employee of ATC Communications, which eventually became the owner of the cable service, Shirlee was there on Monday, May 2, when she cut the cable and disabled the Malad cable system.

The newest member inducted into the Malad Women’s Bowling Hall of Fame is Chey Wilson. She was selected because of her involvement in the Women’s Association, as well as promoting bowling. She has participated in every tournament held in Malad, as well as state tournaments. When Malad hosted the state tournaments, she was always willing to help in any way she could.

On Saturday, May 7, Arne Jones was inducted into the 2016 National Wrestling Hall of Fame in ceremonies held in Pocatello. Jones received the “Lifetime Service to Wrestling”, given in recognition of years of dedication to the development of leadership and citizenship in young people through the sport of Wrestling.

 It was announced that this induction was unique to the Idaho Chapter because it is the first father/son induction in the history of the Idaho Chapter. Arne’s father, AJay Jones, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2004 for his lifetime service as a coach.

15 YEARS AGO (2011)

The cast of the Iron Door Playhouse’s production of Little Women posed for a picture in The Idaho Enterprise with one of their directors. Cast members included: Josselyn Ramos, Monica Green, Emily Jo Christiansen, Alexandra Danielson, Carrie Ann Christiansen, Katie Tapp, Tracy Tapp, Scott Danielson, Tricia Danielson and Pennie Wolf. 

The Malad Classic Car and Bike Show is on the docket for this weekend. The Cruise-In and Classic Car Show is sponsored by the Malad Chamber of Commerce. Something new for the kids this year is a cardboard box car show for the children set for Friday at Malad Drive In after the Cruise-In.

Five local pianists recently competed in the Northern Cache Valley Performing Arts Festival held in Preston. Those participating were Bryn Haycock, Daegon Haycock, MaCall Smith, Landon Smith and Raegan Smith, all of whom are students of Christine Smith.

Tayja Marie Grote graduated from Utah State University on May 7 with honors. Tayja received a Bachelor of Science degree in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing. She is a 2007 honors graduate from Malad High School.

Young Hayden Schwartz completed his goal of collecting toys for the Primary Children’s Medical Center, and on May 18, along with his family he took 33 large boxes of toys, donated by Malad Elementary School and residents of the community, purchased through cash donations, to the hospital.

Harrison Smith earned the title of Mr. MHS at the annual competition. Bubba Crump was named first runner-up with Tyrell Hubbard as the second runner-up and Jess Blaisdell earned the Spirit of Mr. MHS Award.

20 YEARS AGO (2006)

The family of John Roderick celebrated his 98th birthday with a Dutch oven dinner at his home in Pleasantview.

Pictured in The Idaho Enterprise were the Dance Elite’s Wee Petite dancers that are getting ready for their program this Friday, May 12. The team included: Savanah Poulson Haylee Kimberling, Kylee Hunt, Addilyn Price, Tristen Bailey Payton Tripp and Cody Hyder.

Pleasantview Ward has a newly called bishopric. Serving as bishop will be Jeff Gibson, first counselor is David Jensen, and second counselor is Rod Wangsgard. Also serving will be Kelly Wakley as assistant ward clerk, Don Buehler as executive secretary and Blair Palmer as ward clerk.

The Ninth Annual (2006) Malad Classic Car Show, sponsored by the Malad Area Chamber of Commerce, was held on May 5 with 103 cars entering this year. The Best of Show Award went to Terry Miller from Salt Lake City, Utah for his 1955 Chevy Bel Air 2-door. The Poker Run winner of the best hand with a straight was Scott McNair.

Caleb Morrison was named Mr. MHS at the competition last weekend, first attendant was Layne Moeller and second attendant is Jake Hess. Spirit of Mr. MHS was selected by the contestants and was given to Wren Murray.

The Malad Area Chamber of Commerce named two former educators to be this year’s grand marshals of the Independence Day parade. In keeping with the parade theme “The Spirit of Freedom – Teaching America’s Youth”, Pearl and Oren Jones will usher entries along the parade route to set the stage for Malad’s July 4th festivities.

Malad businessman Lynn Price took over the Olympic Torch at about 9th Street in Pocatello last Thursday when the Olympic Flame came to Southeast Idaho. The 18th torchbearer in a field of 20, he carried the torch for about three-quarters of a mile – from about 9th Street to ISU’s Davis Field.

Ricks College has announced the honor roll for the winter semester that ended April 26. Students from Malad whose names are listed are Beverly Bott, Allison Buehler, Mike Christensen, LeeAnn Holgate, and Sherrie Rindlisbacher.

Local businessman, J.D. Thomas will be the keynote speaker for the 83rd annual Malad High School graduation exercises to be held on May 22. Citing Thomas’s ability to get a point across in a fun, interesting way, the Class of ‘96’ likes his sense of humor and has enjoyed talks he has given in the past.

40 YEARS AGO (1986)

Idaho First National Bank took over the reins at a Malad-based bank Monday morning of this week following a closure order issued by the State Department of finance. First Bank and Trust of Idaho was taken over Friday, at 5:07 p.m., by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation becoming the first state-charted bank to fail in 31-years in Idaho.

Malad teacher, Nola Thomas, will begin work this summer as the new Region V President-Elect of the Idaho Education Association. She was notified Monday, May 5th, that her bid for the position had been successful.

Malad’s Junior Miss Scholarship Competition will be held on Saturday May 31st, in the Malad Elementary Auditorium. There are fifteen girls vying for the title of Junior Miss and hoping to get a portion of the $20,414.50 in scholarships that are available. Competing this year are the following: Lori Thomas, Tricia Hill, Heather Davis, Shannon Hyer, Dori Hilden, Alina Marble, Vicky Jenson, Kellie Hendricks, Marlo Willie, Heather Ward, Karen Jones, Karen Vaughan, Stephanie Cottle, Stacy Barker and Paula Madsen.

Eleven area residents recently completed requirements at Oneida County Hospital for certifications as nursing assistants. All students completed 60 hours of classroom instruction and 30 hours of bedside care under supervision to achieve the certification from the Idaho State University Vo-Tech School. Instructor for the course was RN Norma Naugler, who has a bachelor of nursing degree. She was supervised by Myrna Tovey, Nursing Administrator at Oneida County Hospital and Nursing Home. Those completing the course are Terrie Tarango, Ruth Thomas, Lori Hess, Sue Robbins, Deborah L. Keller, Marilyn Mata, Reyna Rodiquez, Mary Modispacher, Loma Lloyd, Jessie Peabody and Patsy Scott.

50 YEARS AGO (1976)

Kim Lamont Hess, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ferris Hess, will serve in the Lansing Michigan, LDS Mission. Elder Hess is a graduate of Malad High School and has attended Ricks College at Rexburg.

The search is on for a new court administrator for the Idaho Sixth District Judicial Court. Edward L. Scott, present court administrator, has resigned his position effective June 1. Scott is leaving the job after two years as administrator and is returning to private law practice in Malad where he owns a title company.

Two Oneida County 4-H girls, Ellen Naugler and Karen Stocks, each received $40 scholarships to attend the Idaho 4-H Congress at Moscow in June. They received their scholarships from competition in the annual Off-The Farm Business tour held in Pocatello on May 5.

Garry Hess was elected in general elections to lead the student body next year as president. Also elected in student body elections were the following: Carilyn Showell, vice president; Cathy Hill, secretary; Rhonda Hess, historian; and Bob Sorensen, business manager. Danece Daniels will serve as the new head cheerleader. 

American Legion Ernest W. Jones Post 65 has announced the selection of Michael Hess, son of J. Marvin and Sandra Hess, as a Boys State delegate. Mike will join Lonie Alder, Delwyn Palmer, Chad Bybee, Jeff Davis, Garry Hess, David Tovey, David Jenkins, Robert Kent and Scott Sorensen when they head to Boise State University the end of May.

60 YEARS AGO (1966)

Two City Police Officers, Veteran Police Chief William E. Thomas and Officer Royal O. Swenson, notified the Malad City Council Wednesday evening that they are retiring from duty. Chief Thomas, who has been on the force for more than 30 year, will retire about June 1st. Officer Swenson tendered his resignation on advice of his doctor. He has been a Malad City Police officer since 1953.

Pvt. Thomas C. Goddard is spending a leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Goddard, from Fort Polk, Louisiana. He will report to Oakland, California, May 17th prior to his going to Vietnam.

Following a close election, the names of the winning candidates in the Student body officer elections were released to the students of MHS on May 6th. The results are as follows: Student body president, Craig Madson; vice president, Dee Burrie; historian, ReNae Hill, secretary, Pat Unsworth; business manager, Kim Hartvigsen and head cheerleader, Cherie Smith.

Airman 3/C Ralph Hanson, who has completed basic training at Amarillo, Texas, visited at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. M. R. Hanson. Upon completion of a two-week leave, he will report for duty at Bolling Air Force Base, Washington, D.C.

Lowell D. Castleton, sophomore pre-law student at Brigham Young University, has been named to the national honorary fraternity, Phi Eta Sigma.  At the organization’s recent awards banquet, he was presented a special gift in recognition of his maintaining a 3.97 grade point average and being awarded a full tuition scholarship.

70 YEARS AGO (1956)

Two Malad students attending Utah State Agricultural College at Logan were among those receiving awards when the annual Awards and Honors Convocation held at the college. Val Hess received the Lt. Clyde Parker Baugh award, which is a tuition scholarship presented to a student on the basis of scholarship, outstanding achievements while in school and leadership ability. Trevor Hughes received the Associated General Contractors’ scholarship award, which is presented to a student on the basis of scholarship and show of promise as a engineer.

After being stationed for the past 20 months with the U.S. Strategic Air Command, 7th Air Force Division, at Greenham Common, England, Lt. Morgan Jones arrived in Malad to spend a leave with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Morgan T. Jones. Upon the expiration of his leave he will be stationed at the Air Force Base at Little Rock, Arkansas.

Joyce Mills, Miss Malad City of 1956, received another honor last weekend when she was named Hi-Queen of Agathon Days at Utah State Agricultural College. 

Mrs. Hannah Evans Deschamps was awarded the Honorary Golden Gleaner Award of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the closing session of the Malad Stake Conference on April 29th. The award to Mrs. Deschamps was the first of this type ever to be presented in the Malad Stake. To qualify, a nominee must be at least 45-years of age; must have rendered faithful and outstanding service to the youth of the Church and in all ways have lived an exemplary life. 

      Mr. and Mrs. John South announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Shirley, to Jay Pope Bills of Logan, son of Oren E. Bills and the late Mrs. Bills. The marriage will be solemnized June 8 in the Logan LDS Temple.

80 YEARS AGO (1946)

Arriving at the New York port of embarkation April 30 after spending more than a year overseas, Pfc. Evan J. Yearsley declared it was “wonderful” to be back in the States. With 44 points, the 22-year-old veteran, whose home is in Malad, should be discharged from service soon. He is now enroute to a separation center near his home. On his chest were the Bronze Star for “heroic service”; the Combat Infantryman’s Badge; the European Theater of Operations Ribbon with two Battle Starts for taking part in the Rhineland and Central European campaigns and the Good Conduct Medal. Entering the service in March of 1944, the European veteran underwent basic training at Camp Roberts, California. In October 1944, he shipped overseas where he joined the 100th (Century) Division.

Wayne E. Williams, son of Mr. and Mrs. S. V. Williams who is stationed at Yokohama, Japan, has been advanced to a sergeant according to word received by his parents.

Roy Evans, classy blocking back on Young University’s grid teams of 1939, 40 and 41, became the latest footballer to join the ranks of Salt Lake City’s first professional grid team today when he signed his contract, according to Fred Tedesco, coach and manager. Evans, who is a great blocker and kicker and a good passer, played for several seasons on the San Diego Naval Training Station since graduating from BYU. He is 25 years of age, 6 ft. tall and tips the scales at 185 pounds. A married man, the former cougar luminary, did his prepping at Malad High School in Idaho where he was an all-around athlete, lettering in football, baseball, track and basketball. He also proved to be a mainstay at guard on several of Coach Floyd Millet’s BYU basketball teams.
