Elle and I have been slothful in reading together lately. What with dance, volleyball, basketball, piano, spring vacation and just being a kid, we have tons of excuses. But when I saw her last reading summary and the growth line wasn’t as steep as I thought it should be, I knew we needed to get back to business. So, last week we got “Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH” out and settled in for a 20-minute nightly commitment. We had been at it for just two nights when I got a text from Lara Goeckeritz, who heads up Friends of the Library. wondering if I could put in a plug for their current read-a-thon. The woman has great timing. I asked her to send me some details which she did.
Folks, I love to read and I am so glad we have a great library. I know anything I can do to help my grandkids create a lasting friendship with books will benefit them and the world. And get this, the library is giving away some great prizes to participants. I’m seriously thinking about signing up myself. I wonder if Grandma Red will sponsor me!
So, here is what you can do: sponsor a kid and encourage him/her to read every day and/or sign up yourself. Then, get creative with sponsors. I can see some good money being raised based on pickleball scores! Drop by the library and pick up a reading log or grab their flyer and scan the QR code. Elle got signed up early in the week and we have been consistent. In fact, on Sunday we read between 7th ward church and 3rd ward church times, it pays to be consistent. In our reading Mrs. Frisby is just getting ready to visit the Rats of NIMH and that is exciting! Life is so Good!
