MHS wins 3 of 4 over the week

Apr 23, 2025 12:14PM ● By Allison Eliason

The Malad baseball team advanced their record to 14-5, adding three more wins at home before suffering a loss to Bear River on the road.  Across the games, the Dragons ended their week with a record of 4-1, tallying 48 runs, on 43 hits in just 27 innings.

The MHS team began their week of games Wednesday, April 16 as they traveled to Soda Springs to take on the Cardinals.  The defense dominated the opening inning, both teams collecting three outs before completing a run around the bases.  The second inning found the Dragons up 3-0, punching in their runs even after bagging two outs early.

Braxden Kaufman first landed a base hit on a hard ground ball to center field.  Ethan Horsley followed with a line drive to second base, reaching first as the baseman bumbled the play.  Brycen Howe stepped to the plate, batting in Kaufman with a fly ball to left field.

Horsley followed across home plate as Cale Briggs hit a hard ground ball, Briggs reaching on an error by the shortstop as Howe advanced to second base.  Holdyn Higley advanced the runners around the bases, loading the bases as Carter Blaisdell went to bat for Malad.  Patiently waiting for his pitch, Briggs took first base after being walked, sending courtesy runner Brayden Arnout in for a third and final run.

After going without a run in the third inning, the Dragons tallied up 3 runs in the fourth inning, not only from their strong hitting game but also due to their aggressive base running game as well.

Malad’s offensive play began as Horsley hit a double before stealing third and advancing to home as the following batter grounded out at second base.  Briggs hit a single, reaching on an error before stealing second base as Higley was up to bat.  As Higley hit a line drive to right field, Briggs headed to third, rounding the base and heading to home for a second run for the inning.

Down the line, Blaisdell hit a pop fly toward shortstop, once again reaching on error.  Blaisdell advanced to second base as Carter Carey hit another base hit for Malad.  As Brady Showell waited for a pitch in the strike zone, Blaisdell stole third, rounding the base.  Reacting to the pickoff attempt, the Cardinals threw the ball to third base but because of an error, left Blaisdell open to run across home plate to bring the score, 6-0.

The fifth inning saw Malad add 2 more runs before punching 8 runs in the sixth and final inning.  The Cardinal pitcher walked four Dragons to first base, setting them up for strategic base running for the innings first runs.   Behind the plate, Blaisdell hit a double-bagger before Carey slammed a triple to center field, followed by Showell adding another double for the last runs of the game to make it 16-0.

The following day, the Dragons hosted the same matchup in Malad, ending the game with a certain win for the MHS team, 14-4.  Rydon Montgomery, playing right field, third base and pitching for a time, led the team from the plate.  The junior had 1 run on 2 hits on 3 at bats, with 3 RBIs with a double in the bottom of the third and a single in the sixth.

Showell began the game on the pitcher’s mound for the Dragons, striking out 11 batters, allowing 1 run on 2 hits, with zero walks and zero errors.

Despite already playing back to back games, Saturday, April 21 featured a double header for Malad as they hosted the American Falls Beavers.  Claiming the win in their first game, the Dragons put up 8 runs on 6 hits.  The fifth inning proved to be Malads best inning as they tallied 5 scores thanks to Montgomery, Blaisdell, Carey, Howe and Showell.

Picking up where they ended the first game, the Dragons had a successful opening inning as they took a 5-0 lead, despite getting two outs on their first at bats.  Amidst a number of walks from the American Falls pitcher, Malad played a strong hitting game.  Carey recorded another triple, with Montgomery and Kurt Ward each adding a double.

The Beaver defense held the Dragons to only 1 run in the second inning, forcing a double play and then snagging the out at first.  Tightening their defense even more in the third inning, American Falls forced three quick outs.

Malad came back in the fourth inning, determined for base hits resulting in scoring runs.  Easton Green was first to make his way on base, hitting a line drive to left field.  Down the line two hitters, Hudson Daniels hit a ground ball near shortstop, reaching first base on an error while Green ran in from third.  Daniel followed across home plate on the next play as Blaisdell hit a single to left field.  Managing another base hit, Carey took first before he and Blaisdell scored the final runs of the inning and game as Showell grounded out to shortstop.

Holding American Falls scoreless in the top of the fifth, the game was called, Malad sweeping their matchup with a final win, 10-0.

Monday, April 21, Malad faced a challenging opponent in the Bear River Bears.  The MHS team kept the Bears within reach as they began the game, down just 5 runs at the bottom of the third.  But as Bear River ended their fourth inning, adding 7 runs to the score, it was more than what the Dragons could come back from, especially as they had yet to punch in a run.

Malad’s lack of runs wasn’t due to lack of hitting, as the Dragon hitter did well to make contact with the ball.  Unfortunately, the solid Bear River defense did well to get under the ball and make the play on the field, keeping the potential hits from landing any MHS batters on base.

Looking ahead at their play for the next week, the Dragons are taking to the road as they take on the Wendell Trojans on Friday, April 25 and the Declo Hornets the following day.
