Final Veterans Day Program at “old” MES

Speaker Dr. David Teeples explains the purpose of the Purple Heart.

This really, finally is it.  With the new elementary school nearing completion just next door to the school which has seen thousands move through its halls, this really is the last Veterans Day program that will ever be held within the “old” Malad Elementary School.  There will be several more events before it’s all said and done, of course, but the Veterans Day program has always been special.  Three of the honored teachers who brought the program into its familiar shape—Helen Ward, Debbie Horsley, and Kerry Evans—were on hand to talk a bit about how the program came about and what it has meant over the years.

The Veterans Essay winners also read their winning essays to the audience.  Ali Hanks, Lacie Palmer, Brittyn Venable, and Saige Cox each read essays which explained how veterans in their own lives had shaped their experiences and understanding of the importance of those who have served.

Music and program director Christine Smith led the students through several songs during the program, including the “Eleven, Eleven March” (so named for the origin of the holiday on the eleventh day of the eleventh month), as well as a medley of the songs of the various branches of service.

Music was also provided by the Teeples family, who performed “We Remember Them” prior to Dr. David Teeples addressing the audience as an Honored Veteran.  Teeples discussed some of the things that had inspired his choice to serve his country, including an early experience with his grandfather’s Purple Heart—which he showed to the students on stage—as well as his own pursuit of medical experience.

Local Veteran Gene Caldwell was also honored for his long service to the county and his country, including 73 years as a part of the American Legion.  Caldwell was not able to be in attendance, but remarks of his were read by friend and MES teacher Cinamman Allen.

A slideshow of Oenida county veterans was presented to honor those living and passed who
have served.

Throughout the program, members of the American Legion Ernest W. Jones Post 65 were in attendance and recognized.  At the end of the program, they were given flowers by representatives of the school.
